AKEL on the anniversary of the declaration of the illegal regime
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th November
Thirty-four years have passed since the declaration of the illegal pseudo-state. Denktash’s move in 1983 was another step in Ankara’s plans to partition Cyprus. Despite the international condemnation of this action too, which was particularly stressed in United Nations Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984), the occupation and its consequences continue.
Unfortunately, the Cyprus problem is at an impasse after the failure of the Crans Montana Conference. The negotiation procedure that began nine years ago is in danger of collapsing. The solution to the Cyprus problem has receded. Turkey is relieved of any responsibilities and this offers it a fertile ground to proceed with the creation of new fait accompli that consolidate partition.
AKEL underlines that the unwavering goal remains the termination of the Turkish occupation and colonization, the liberation and reunification of Cyprus. It remains consistent to the position that the bicommunal, bizonal federal solution with political equality, as defined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship, is the only basis for a solution that will reverse the partitionist fait accompli. To achieve this goal, talks must be resumed from the point where they were interrupted, safeguarding and making use of the acquis created in the negotiations.
On the occasion of the anniversary of the declaration of the illegal regime in the occupied areas, AKEL is organizing an anti-occupation political meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 15th November 2017, at the Orfeas club next to the “green line” in Nicosia at 19:00 p.m. The keynote speaker at the event will be the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou.
