Turkey invokes its guarantee role not to protect the Turkish Cypriots, but to promote its own expansionist interests
Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, AKEL Political Bureau member and AKEL Parliamentary Representative
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 3rd November 2017, Nicosia
AKEL denounces the statements of the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdağ on Turkey’s guarantee rights in Cyprus stemming from International Law, with which Turkey will supposedly provide protection to the Turkish Cypriots.
Turkey invoked its guarantor role in order to abolish International Law, to undermine instead of protecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus.
Turkey invokes its guarantee role not to protect the Turkish Cypriots, but to promote its own expansionist interests and to turn the occupied territories every day that goes by into Turkey to the detriment of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots too.
At the same time, it remains tragic that at the same time as Turkey is invoking its guarantee rights, the UN Secretary-General, in his report, praises Turkey for its positions on the issue of security; that he acknowledges in Turkey that it was prepared to comply with the Guterres framework, despite its public and initial positions.
Even more tragic, of course, is that there was no protest on the part of Mr. Anastasiades about the content of the UN Secretary-General’s report, given that his disastrous handlings in Crans Montana did not even permit him to question the relevant reference in Guterres’ report.
