UN SG’s document raises fundamental and burning questions for Anastasiades to reply to

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th September 2017, Nicosia

The statements of the Greek Foreign Minister Mr. Kotzias raise fundamental and burning questions for Mr. Anastasiades to reply:

  • Why didn’t he inform the National Council and the political forces about the content of the document?
  • What has he to hide?
  • What is Mr. Anastasiades’ position on the document, given that Greece regards this document as an acquis that must be utilized?
  • If the document really does provide for the implementation of the solution with the abolition of the guarantees and rights of intervention, why did Mr. Anastasiades not support Greece’s effort to discuss it at the Crans Montana dinner at a time indeed when Turkey did not want such a discussion to take place because the issue didn’t suit it?
  • What will Mr. Anastasiades say at his meeting with the UN Secretary-General? Will he tell him that it is an informal document and that he won’t discuss it even if the UN Secretary-General has a position on the need to abolish the guarantees and rights of intervention?

The General Secretary of Andros Kyprianou will send a letter to Mr. Anastasiades requesting the convening of the National Council for the political forces to be briefed and a discussion on developments.

AKEL reiterates its position that at the crucial point the Cyprus problem is at it is very important to achieve the continuation of the negotiations from where they had been interrupted, safeguarding the convergences and utilizing the framework of conclusions of the UN Secretary-General.

The only thing the withdrawal of proposals which Mr. Lillikas proposes or the “new strategy” which Mr. Papadopoulos proposes will achieve is to facilitate Turkey’s policy for the definitive suspension of the negotiation procedure and for a deviation from the parameters of the United Nations.
