The Estonian EU Presidency’s anti-communist frenzy is leading Europe to take dangerous paths

AKEL denounces the anticommunist event organized by the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council within the framework of today’s EU Justice Ministers’ meeting in Tallinn. At the same time, in Estonia, as in other EU member states too, Nazi collaborators are recognized as heroes, while Second World War anti-fascist monuments are being demolished and the activity of the Communist Parties criminalized.
The Estonian EU Presidency’s event represents a new episode in the systematic efforts underway by the European Union and EU member-state governments to falsify Europe’s contemporary history and to equate Nazi-fascism with communist ideology.
This EU campaign is being waged with large amounts of money at its disposal within the framework of a campaign to shape the consciousness of the European peoples so that the criminalization of the communist movement and the defamation of the ideals of social equality will be accepted. It is of course not accidental that all this is taking place in the era of the crisis and when European societies are confronted with all the deadlocks of the system. At the same time, this campaign represents a dangerous attempt to exonerate fascism and to relativize the criminal character, not only of fascism’s actions, but of its ideology as well. AKEL points out that US President Donald Trump has also employed the “theory of the two extremes” to equate the Nazi groups and those nostalgic of the inhuman Ku Klux Klan with all those fighting racism, discriminations and attacks on freedom in the United States.
No matter how many anti-communist events may be organized, the peoples of Europe know that the only “meeting” of fascism with Communism was in Stalingrad, Leningrad, and on so many other battlefields of the Second World War when, due to the immense sacrifices made by the Soviet people Nazism was crushed and the greater part of our continent was liberated.
At the same time, AKEL recalls that Europe’s modern history proves that such type of persecutions and attacks begin by first targeting communists, but very soon they subsequently target every democratic progressive voice.
