AKEL C.C. statement on the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th May 2017, Nicosia
The Central Committee of AKEL today discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus problem. The C.C. expresses its deep concern about the deadlock situation that has evolved as regards the Cyprus problem, and indeed because of procedural reasons.
This situation harbors many dangers. Without a continuation of the negotiations, the occupational partitionist status quo is further consolidated, the sale of Greek Cypriot properties and colonialization continues and Turkey promotes its strategic objectives.
Historical experience has repeatedly demonstrated that the impasse on the Cyprus problem, especially when accompanied by responsibilities being apportioned on the Greek Cypriot side, has always been exploited by Turkey and other involved parties for the creation of new faits accompli to the detriment of Cyprus.
Consequently, instead of the President of the Republic and his associates declaring that we also had deadlocks in the past too and making assurances about the situation, they should focus on one last effort to salvage the negotiations. At the same time, it is imperative that they work towards addressing the real dangers that arise before us. One of the significant dangers is Turkey’s provocations in relation to the exercise of our sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.
AKEL makes one promise to the Cypriot people, namely that it will remain committed and consistent to the struggle for a solution that will liberate and reunify the country and the people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots within the framework of a bicommunal, bizonal federation.
The C.C. of AKEL urges all those who believe in this agreed framework to rally with us in the struggle for the vindication of our people.
