Unfortunately what we were warning about and were afraid of has happened
Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th May 2017, Nicosia
Unfortunately what we were warning about and were afraid of has happened.
Its tragic that at a time when a long distance has been covered in the negotiations, reaching the point of discussing the territorial issue with the submission of maps, as well as the issue of security on which Turkey is called upon to demonstrate its will for a solution, the procedure is collapsing solely for methodological reasons, as UN Secretary-General Special Representative on Cyprus Mr. Eide characteristically stated.
As we always do, we shall wait to be briefed by the President of the Republic to be informed before we state our position comprehensively.
At these crucial moments, what we want to reiterate is that without negotiations there is no solution, but the continuation and consolidation of the partitionist status quo, which completely serves Turkey’s strategic goals.
AKEL, regardless of the difficulties, will continue to struggle for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on principles and the agreed framework.
We call on all those who share the vision of the solution to join us in the common struggle to prevent new faits accompli and adventures, to rid ourselves of the current partitionist status quo, to liberate and reunite our homeland and people.
