The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation is claiming that AKEL has accused the Greek Foreign Minister Mr. Kotzias of undermining the talks because he denounced the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Cyprus Mr. Eide. It also claims that AKEL has accused the Movement of Ecologists Cooperation for the same reason.

AKEL has never accused Mr. Kotzias. On this specific issue, we had stated that, since the Cypriot government had agreed to the content and sending of the letter, that it itself should have undertaken the task of sending it as the directly involved party.

AKEL has not accused the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation either. AKEL has a long-standing position that on matters regarding relations with the UN Secretary-General, including the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General as well, should be handled with great care and always in the light of the negotiations and developments surrounding the Cyprus problem in general.

Until recently, the government pursued this approach. What has changed now, and the President of the Republic is altering the government’s approach, at the same time as he is assuring that he is not dealing with the presidential election?
