The anachronistic system of guarantees must be terminated

Given all that has seen the light of day with respect to the key issue of security and guarantees, AKEL stresses yet again that, in the context of a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem, the anachronistic system of guarantees must be terminated.
The solution of the Cyprus problem must ensure the security of both communities and therefore the security of one community cannot be ensured at the expense of the other community’s security. For that reason, it is imperative that the Turkish occupation troops withdraw and any rights of intervention must be terminated.
The issue of security and guarantees can be resolved through a representative international conference within the framework and under the auspices of the United Nations given that the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem will have previously been solved. This is precisely where Turkey’s verbal declarations in favour of a solution of the Cyprus problem will be judged whether they have any practical meaning.
