The illegal neo-colonial in content agreement on water does not create any binding obligation for our side
Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 1st March 2016, Nicosia
The imminent signing of an “agreement” on the water issue between Turkey and the pseudo-state is creating an additional serious problem in the efforts underway to solve the Cyprus problem. While this agreement, because of its unacceptable and in essence neo-colonial content, is provoking fierce reactions among Turkish Cypriots themselves, it cannot be expected from us that it will be ever accepted.
The only existing way to address the issue is the conclusion of a relative intergovernmental agreement between the federal Republic of Cyprus and Turkey which as such of course must be in line with the principles and the agreed framework of the solution of the Cyprus problem. Any ideas that the “agreement” between Turkey and the pseudo-state will create a binding obligation for us after the solution is unrealistic and any such possible orientations will deal a severe blow to the negotiating procedure that is at a crucial point.
