The Turkish stand will be judged at the negotiating table
Statement of Aristos Damianos, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and AKEL MP
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th February 2016, Nicosia
The content of the interview given by the Turkish Foreign Minister to Sunday’s “Fileleftheros” newspaper is in a similar spirit to that which prevailed during the recent visit of the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou to Turkey.
We note the Turkish side’s verbal shift on key chapters of the negotiations, such as security and guarantees and the economic aspect, as well as the underlining that the sought aim is to achieve a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution.
We stress AKEL’s firm long-standing position that the Turkish stand and position will be judged at the negotiating table itself, where there is unfortunately still a long way to go before we reach the desired solution.
We, consistent to the goal of liberation and peaceful reunification, expect everyone to adopt a serious, responsible and far from petty-political considerations stand with regards the handling of the Cyprus problem.
