Which of all the government’s pledges should the people believe in on EAC?

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th January 2016, Nicosia

The government and ruling forces are trying to reassure people and the workers in the Semi-governmental organisation of the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) and invoking the decision to remove the Organisation from the relevant decree, they are pledging not to proceed with privatization of the EAC.

The question however is which of all the government’s pledges should citizens and EAC employees believe in? Should they perhaps believe in the pre-election pledge, which they had broken just ten days after assuming office? Or is it perhaps the subsequent position they took that privatizations are a necessary evil imposed by the Troika and for which the previous government is responsible for? Or is it maybe the position they subsequently and to this day maintain that privatizations are a necessary and beneficial modernizing reforms? Or is it the plans and scheming of the government and the Troika for the EAC’s selling off, of which the separation of the EAC’s ownership constitute an integral part of and a precondition?

This is the reason why citizens and the EAC employees do not trust the government and ruling forces at all, judging them by their actions, contradictions and erratic policy; a policy that has proved to be determined by their obsessive pursuit to serve the large private interests.
