The foreign interventions created the monster of terrorism

                                                                                     

Statement of Neoklis Sylikiotis, AKEL MEP and Vice-President of GUE/NGL

“We express our grief for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris, Tunis, Beirut and stress the need for immediate destruction of ISIS. However, we must also recognize the need for an immediate end to the on-going foreign interventions and wars being waged in the Arab world because it is precisely these foreign interventions and socio-economic inequalities that have created the monster of terrorism, which to this day the West and its allies continue to support.” This is what AKEL MEP and Vice-President of the European United Left Neoklis Sylikiotis underlined today before the plenary of the European Parliament. The subject of discussion was the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

AKEL MEP Sylikiotis stressed that unfortunately what the imperialist interventions of the US and the ruling EU circles have sowed today is being reaped by the innocent peoples of the world. However, he added, the fear that has prevailed must not permit authoritarianism to dominate and the legitimization of repressive measures for the curbing of individual rights and freedoms.

In concluding his intervention, Neoklis Sylikiotis underlined that we must not allow the targeting of immigrants, refugees or Muslims blaming them for all that is taking place. Besides, as he pointed out, terrorist acts are being committed every day in Iraq, Libya, Lebanon and Syria, killing innocent people and creating new waves of refugees.
