UN Secretary-General’s draft Report doesn’t emphasize enough Turkey’s provocative violations
Statement of Eleni Mavrou, Member of the Political Bureau of AKEL
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th January 2015, Nicosia
What has been made public confirms initially our fears about the United Nations adopting a position of equal distancing.
The Report, inter alia, lays emphasis on the resumption of the talks without giving corresponding emphasis on Turkey’s provocative violations.
It is evident that the President of the Republic’s statement did not have any affect, as AKEL had indeed warned.
It is correct, but not enough to declare that as long as the violation of our sovereign rights is on-going our participation in negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem is impossible. In the current difficult conditions initiatives and a responsible handling by all is demanded, but above all by the President of the Republic himself.
However we reserve to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the final text of the Report.
