AKEL ON STATEMENTS MADE BY THE PRESIDENT

Statement by Deputy Parliamentary Spokesman of AKEL-Left-New Forces Stavros Evagorou

Press Office C.C. of AKEL, 4th March 2013, Nicosia

Mr. Anastasiades in the memorial service for the EOKA hero Grigoris Afxentiou held yesterday referred to the mistakes and division obliging us to be struggling to reunify and liberate our homeland.

We point out that Mr. Anastasiades and his party, as they did in the past, carefully avoid referring by name to these mistakes, by making vague references to a “national division” that led to the modern tragedy which the Cypriot people is living through until today.

However, if we really want to learn from the mistakes of the past, so that it wont be necessary to sacrifice any more of our mother country’s sons as heroes, it is imperative that we say things as they truly are by their name; about everyone and all that is to blame for the tragic situation our country got into.

Approaching our country’s political history in a self-critical manner the biggest political crime committed against our people cannot and must not be hidden and buried by references to “national division”.

It is the traitorous, fascist and fanatical activity of EOKA B that opened the gates to the Turkish army to invade, loot and create the faits accomplis our people are living through to this day.

The attempt to overthrow the constitutional order, the fact that certain very well-known circles and forces turned guns against Democracy and the Republic was that crime without which Turkey could not have implemented its unlawful plans against our people.

We express the wish that Mr. Anastasiades now as President of the Republic of Cyprus can be bold and find the courage to abandon references that apportion equal responsibilities to victims and perpetrators alike by naming the true criminals of the modern Cypriot tragedy.
