Will the government extend the support measures or will it continue to turn a blind eye?
Statement by AKEL C.C. member Vakis Charalambous
8 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The significant drop recorded in deposits of households over the last 5 months reveals the inability, especially of vulnerable households, to cope with the pressure exerted by the ongoing price pressures.
High fuel and electricity prices, as well as of essential goods, combined with increased loan repayments, continue to nibble away at household disposable incomes with people’s standard of living falling.
The time frame of the measures providing cover against price increases is running out and the government is called upon to respond.
Will the government take substantive and additional measures to increase people’s disposable income, especially of our vulnerable fellow citizens?
Will it extend the support measures or will it continue to turn a blind eye to the daily problems society is confronted with, while the state is accumulating millions in additional revenues from people’s pockets as a result of the price increases and high cost of living?
