The ruling government forces must stop hiding

Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Political Bureau member and Head of the Justice/Legal Affairs Department of AKEL

22 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

For weeks, AKEL has been posing specific questions to the government ruling forces regarding the handling of the well-known cases of illegal dual-use spyware and, more specifically, with regards the activities of the former Israeli agent in the Republic of Cyprus.

As a result of recent press reports, according to which companies allegedly changed officials and shareholders in an apparent attempt to evade any responsibility, we have again raised specific questions, which for the umpteenth time remain unanswered. Since the President of the Republic is fond of the now well-known political joke that he talks ‘without beating about the bush’, we therefore ask him and expect to hear a clear political position on the issue of transparency and public accountability.

  • What does the Christodoulides government intend to do about the actions of these companies and their officials, given the fact that much of what we have denounced about illegal surveillance in the Republic of Cyprus has not yet been investigated?
  • Have the government ruling forces studied the consequences of a possible change of officials and shareholders, and indeed in advance?
  • Have similar requests for changes been approved by the Companies Registrar?

The questions are insistent and await answers.

If Mr.Christodoulides wants to stay on the same path as his

predecessor and political mentor, Mr.Anastasiades, it would be good if society knows it. However, if he wants to serve the rule of law and transparency, those in power must stop hiding and backing down from the unacceptable actions that are once again seeing the light of day, with the result that the Republic of Cyprus continues to be exposed.
