The President appoints influential people with an eye on the 2028 Presidential elections

President Nicos Christodoulides has once again broken his pre-election promises of promoting a “new ethos” and “meritocracy” in government.
The announcement of appointments to the positions of General Directors of Ministries has once again confirmed that Nikos Christodoulides’ concern is to set up a network of people he considers “his own” in view of the upcoming 2028 Presidential Elections.
The appointments of people from the presidential circle, even people who are under investigation conducted by the Legal Service, are a revealing example of the most backword form of politics: a merry-go-round of cronyism through rewarding friends, acquaintances and courtiers that are perpetuating the clientelist state and degenerating any notion of meritocracy.
These phenomena disappoint even the most loyal supporters of Nikos Christodoulides and, worse still, keep the country hostage to clientelism and stagnation.
