The government’s incompetence in waste management is monumental

The incompetence of N. Christodoulides’ government in waste management is monumental. Cyprus continues to bury most of the waste it produces, the European Union is taking legal action against the country, but the government’s response is, once again, issuing announcements of new plans totalling €162 million so that we, as a country, can continue to bury our waste rather than manage it.

As if enough that the criminal mistakes and delays of both the current and previous governments that have left the country extremely vulnerable weren’t enough; to this very today – faced with this tragic situation – they refuse to focus on how the country can develop a comprehensive waste management policy.

Society cannot continue to bear the cost of their failure. The situation is desperate for public health, for households and also for local authorities, which – under the reform – will take over the management of Integrated Waste Management Plants (OEDA) without having the necessary funding.

AKEL reiterates that the situation in Pentakomo and Koshi is not a mere technical problem but the result of erroneous planning, mistakes, delays and the absence of a comprehensive policy.

These are the issues the government must address.
