The General Secretary of AKEL met with the Deputy Chief of the National Guard

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, had a meeting today with the new Deputy Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Loukas Hadjimichael.  The meeting took place on the occasion of the assumption of office of Lieutenant General Loukas Hadjimichael. The AKEL delegation also included Nikos Ioannou, member of the Political Bureau of AKEL.

Issues concerning the defence of the Republic of Cyprus were discussed during the meeting. The General Secretary of AKEL reiterated the Party’s position that Cyprus needs a National Guard which can act as a credible deterrent force against the occupying power Turkey. Defence is part of the goal of achieving a solution for the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people through peaceful means. The meeting also discussed service issues related to the National Guard’s morale.

S.Stefanou reiterated that AKEL will continue to address the issues related to our country’s defence and security in a responsible manner and far from any populism.
