The cronyism in the appointments to semi-public organisations cannot be concealed with excuses

8 August 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The more the government tries to find excuses for the cronyism it has indulged regarding the appointments made to the boards of semi-governmental organisations, the more it exposes itself. N. Christodoulides promised meritocracy but has ultimately surpassed even the previous DISY government in cronyism and clientelism.

Clearly, the President’s top priority is the 2028 presidential election, instead of the public interest – which can be served by capable and experienced people, regardless of political affiliation or ideological beliefs.

In Cyprus, the Christodoulides government is writing a poor imitation of the well-known film: ‘All the President’s Men’. Or rather, of the governing parties…

And one final point: how much longer will the President and the members of the so-called Advisory Council continue to make fools of themselves by providing cover for the Christodoulides government’s cronyism and clientelism?
