The Christodoulides government has no plan for energy

25 August 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The constant reports – which the government does not even dare to deny – about the natural gas terminal in Vasilikos confirm what AKEL has been saying for some time: namely that the government of Nicos Christodoulides has no plan for energy and is failing miserably to provide solutions to the deadlocks it inherited from the Anastasiades-DISY government.

On numerous occasions, the Minister of Energy has given assurances – both before Parliament and to the public – about the arrival of natural gas, but reality has proven him wrong, given that since 2023 the timetables he himself has set have never been met one after the other. Today, the pending issues and shortcomings are all mounting, and no one knows when— or if —natural gas will indeed arrive for electricity generation, which is the only way to significantly reduce energy costs.

In the end, there was no Plan B, nor was there any real alternative in place, with the result that today the most critical strategic project for energy is up in the air, with society paying the cost of energy insecurity, supply risks, and extremely expensive electricity prices.

The government’s stance on this key issue is irresponsible, as it is in its third year of governance and, instead of providing solutions, it is trying to shirk its responsibilities by making numerous statements and doing in fact very little.

We have seen the same scenario of delays and incompetence on the part of the government regarding other critical projects and the energy sector. The upgrade of Dekelia is delayed, resulting in more frequent power cuts and the risk of blackouts looming. There are also delays in storage infrastructure, resulting in thousands of consumers suffering increasingly frequent cuts. The government has failed to address the distortions, with the result that certain private individuals in the renewable energy sector continue to make exorbitant profits at the expense of society and the economy.

Society can no longer tolerate this mockery. It is time for the government to take responsibility before it leads Cyprus into total energy chaos.
