Tax reform will not be achieved through threats and blackmail

Written statement by AKEL Member of Parliament and Head of Economic Policy Haris Polycarpou

28 August 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Tax reform will not be achieved by issuing threats and blackmail, but through dialogue.

The reform is a necessity, but for it to proceed, both its philosophy and its separate proposals must serve the majority of working people and small and medium-sized businesses, and especially of all those income groups and social groups that are most in need of support.

AKEL is not a ratifying mechanism. It has opinions and specific proposals to submit, which it will present both at the meeting with the Minister of Finance and in the ensuing debate in Parliament.

President Christodoulides must realize that changes to the country’s tax system affect the socio-economic conditions of society and working people and cannot be made hastily and by issuing ultimatums.
