Statement by Aristos Damianou, Head of the Justice Sector of AKEL and MP on the recent murders committed in Cyprus

1 November 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

We express our deep concern about the new spate of serious crimes in the Republic of Cyprus with the very recent murders of two persons within 48 hours. Indeed they were committed in residential areas and in one case in front of the eyes of stunned citizens. It is obvious that there is public order and security issue. We await the necessary explanations from the competent Ministry of Justice and of course from the leadership of the police force for the measures they are taking.

Citizen’s safety must be above all other priorities, which is precisely why we will be calling for explanations regarding these recent events and, of course, we have unanimously decided in the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee to reopen an old debate regarding the upsurge in crime in Cyprus.
