Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas on Ms. Charalambidou’s interview with ‘Fileleftheros’ newspaper

The statements and accusations against AKEL made by Irini Charalambidou in her interview today in ‘Fileleftheros’ newspaper contradict what she herself has said in the past about our party. In any case, they raise the following questions:

– If everything she is accusing AKEL of today – about a campaign against her and mudslinging – is true, then why did she say she wanted to continue for a fourth term with AKEL?

– Can any progressive and thoughtful citizen believe, even today, that it is better for the country that Nicos Christodoulides was elected in 2023? And to feel vindicated that the candidate supported by our country’s entire Left and the progressive spectrum was not elected?

And above all, is it logical and honest for someone to be a Member of Parliament with one party and at the same time to be discussing running as a candidate with another political party?
