Price hikes are growing – The government is living in its own world
Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member & Head of Economic Policy Charis Polycarpou
18 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The recent findings of the Cyprus Council of Economy and Competitiveness that the principal danger for the Cyprus economy are the ongoing price hikes, combined with the new fuel increases, reflect what society is experiencing on a daily basis anyway. Price hikes are growing and bringing households and businesses to their knees.
At the same time, the government continues to live in its own world. It denies the signals conveyed by economic indicators and pretends not to see and listen to economic analyses and reports. With each passing day it demonstrates more and more that it neither wants, nor can it support society. Otherwise, it would have put forward a comprehensive plan to tackle poverty. Otherwise, it would have adopted measures that AKEL and the opposition had voted for in Parliament with an overwhelming majority. It would have already taken the initiative to tax super-profits in the energy sector.
It is obvious that the government of the DISY party has left society to be at the mercy price hikes and is leading the economy into adventures. In the last months of its term of office it cannot offer any hope and a perspective to the people. This can only come about through a progressive change in the governance of the country
