AKEL App Disclosure Statement
The following text explains how and why we process your personal data when you use the AKEL App (the “App”) and your rights in relation to your data. What data do we collect and for what purposes
As a political party, AKEL collects personal data to promote its socio-political purposes. We collect different data from the users of the Application depending on their status either as our members or as friends and supporters of the party.
Data of friends and supporters of the party
When you download the Application to log in to the part of the Application that allows you to participate in surveys or submit opinions, you will be asked for your name, email, phone, address, and date of birth. We use this data, among other things, to inform you about events and to receive your views and ideas on various topics through the Application.
Members’ Data
When you download the Application to log in to the part of the Application created for our members you will be asked for your policy ID number for purposes of identification with your membership record. The number is not saved in the App files. The mandatory data we collect for our members in connection with the use of the Application includes name, email, telephone, address, and date of birth. We use this data for, among other things, organizational purposes and to communicate with our members about party work, sessions and events, and to get our members’ views and ideas on various issues through the Application.
When you declare your consent to receive political communication from AKEL, through the Application, AKEL will use your contact information to communicate with you through the Application, or by e-mail, or by messages in relation to the work it performs AKEL, political news, activities, events, pre-election messages and political contests. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, through the Application or by contacting AKEL at the email address gdpr@akel.org.cy or by deactivating (unsubscribe/stop-sms) messages or by using the option to delete your account through App or through the AKEL website:

How we process data
Our legal basis for data processing is most often the legitimate interest of AKEL. We use the data we collect to promote AKEL’s socio-political and organizational goals and to facilitate two-way communication between AKEL and its members, and supporters and friends of the party and with society in general. In relation to political communication with our constituents, we obtain their consent. AKEL executives and members, elected representatives and candidates have access to the data to communicate with the party’s voters and receive communication from you. Individuals have the right to withdraw their consent to this processing at any time by contacting AKEL.
Data analysis
We analyze the data we collect in order to obtain political support, for party organizational purposes, to understand what issues and problems concern society and voters, to decide where to send material related to our various campaigns and what material to send , to analyze how voters are likely to vote in elections and polls, to analyze where our various political actions should be focused.
Disclosure of personal data
We may share personal data with third parties (recipients) with whom we cooperate and/or provide us with services (e.g. companies that provide technical services, IT services, software provision and maintenance, etc.). Where we use third parties to process personal data, we ensure that this processing is governed by a contract that sets out their responsibilities for data protection and the rights of individuals.
Data Storage and Security
The personal data is stored in a central electronic system with limited access and stored in a computer cloud (cloud storage), only for as long as is necessary to fulfill the purposes mentioned above. At the end of the predetermined retention periods and when there is no further reason to retain the personal data, it is destroyed. For any personal data that we process with the consent of individuals (e.g. to inform about events) it will be kept until the individuals notify us that they no longer wish to receive this information and as long as the data is not necessary for any other purpose. AKEL implements all the necessary technical and organizational measures for data security. Please contact us for more information regarding the measures we take and retention periods.
Your Rights
Based on the GDPR, you have the following rights in relation to your personal data:
- a) You have the right to know what data we process about you, how and for what purpose and to request a copy of your data. (Access right)
- b) You can request correction of your data if it is incorrect, inaccurate or incomplete. It is important that you inform us if there is a change in your data.
- c) You can request the deletion of your personal data if the processing is based on your consent which you have withdrawn, if the data has ceased to be necessary or if the processing is illegal.
- d) You can exercise the right to oppose or restrict the processing of your personal data, for example when you request that it be corrected.
- e) You can request that we stop using your personal data to send you political information. The easiest way is to withdraw your consent (by contacting the e-mail address gdpr@akel.org.cy or you can use the “stop sms” or “unsubscribe” functionality which is present in every text message or e-mail that you receive from AKEL.
- f) You may request that your personal data not be subject to decisions based solely on automated processing when such processing may have legal or other significant consequences for you. In such cases you can request the intervention of a natural person and you have the right to appeal the decision.
