New deterioration in Cyprus’ indicators on corruption and the rule of law

Statement by AKEL C.C. Giorgos Koukoumas

27 September 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The updated figures of the World Bank, published today by the newspaper ‘Politis’, reveal once again that Cyprus has recorded the greatest deterioration across the European Union with regards the indicators concerning corruption and the rule of law. In fact, this is the eighth consecutive year – that is to say, from 2013 to date – that a deterioration has been registered in Cyprus’ indicators on corruption and the influence of private interests over state decisions.

This is a reality that shames our country and which, of course, the Cypriot people themselves know and are experiencing first hand. Unfortunately, however, it could not be otherwise, since Mr. Anastasiades and his government are the protagonists in scandals and cases of blatant conflict of interest. This is precisely the reason why the government is silence and bypassing successive damning international reports that refute its own narrative.
