Message of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou to the 1st Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party and President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz Canel

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, sent a letter to the 1st Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party and President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz Canel, on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada barracks.

26 July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

“Dear comrade Diaz Canel,

On this highly significant 68th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks, the Central Committee of AKEL and personally myself, extend to you, to the people and the Communist Party of Cuba a fraternal greeting of solidarity.

The 26th of July was the starting point of the Cuban people’s struggle against the subservient to the United States Batista regime.  That was a dictatorial regime that had no consideration to lead Cuba and its people to social and economic development, and which has stripped the country and its people of its wealth and dignity.  The heroic struggle that was the continuation of the 26th of July, led to the victory of the Cuban Revolution, and as Fidel had predicted in his defense in court, History vindicated the revolutionaries.

Currently your Country too is facing increasing challenges as we all live the second year of the pandemic caused by Covid-19.  The consequences of the pandemic inflict significant blows to national economies, but mostly affect greatly the less economically developed countries and most vulnerable popular strata.  The decisions of the previous and current US Administrations aimed at hardening further the 62-years-long illegal economic, trade and financial blockade on Cuba during the pandemic, is indicative of its objective: to cause more obstacles and to damage the Cuban people’s daily life hoping that this would lead to the defeat of the Cuban Revolution. The use of social networks and means of hybrid war by the US against Cuba, calling supposedly for a “humanitarian corridor” but in essence of a military intervention, is a clear indication that the US and others pursuing this line, have no real consideration for human lives.

On this occasion too, AKEL reiterates its unequivocal condemnation of the new US aggression against Cuba, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law as it constitutes an intervention in the internal affairs of an independent country. Together with all freedom-loving peoples of the world we demand that the US terminates the illegal blockade against Cuba, as demanded for the 29th time by 184 states in the UN General Assembly 23 of June 2021 Resolution.

Cuba and its people have the undisputable right, just as any other people, to develop on the socio-economic path they have decided. AKEL stands by the Cuban people and the PCC at this difficult time, just as Cuba has stood by the Republic of Cyprus at all difficult times of its 61 years of independence. We thank Cuba for its internationalist message sent through the Henry Reeves medical brigade and for its readiness to share with the world the anti-covid-19 vaccines created by Cuban scientists.

Dear Comrade,

Moncada was and will be a milestone, not only in the course of Cuba, but also in the history of the world revolutionary movement and the struggle of the peoples for freedom, national independence and socialism.

Comradely greetings,

Stefanos Stefanou

General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL”
