Meeting between the General Secretary of AKEL and the Vice President of the National People’s Congress of China

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, head of an AKEL Party delegation, today had a meeting with the Vice President of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China and President of the NGO Network for International Exchanges, Xiao Jie. The Chinese official was accompanied by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cyprus, Liu Yantao, and a large delegation visiting Cyprus as part of an official visit.

During the meeting, views were exchanged on a number of issues of common interest, both international and national. The common concern was expressed about the international situation and the need to develop multilateralism and peaceful cooperation with respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations. The duty to protect the planet from the  climate crisis so that future generations can live was also emphasized.

Xiao Jie briefed the AKEL delegation on the recent decisions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chima regarding the country’s developmental path, focusing on the welfare of the people and the use of science, technology, and innovation to achieve these goals.

Stefanos Stefanou briefed the Chinese delegation of AKEL’s position for the solution of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, with the aim of reunifying Cyprus and its people. He also thanked China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, for its principled position in favour of the reunification of Cyprus and reaffirmed AKEL’s support for the One China principle.

Finally, mutual satisfaction was expressed with the level of bilateral inter-state relations and relations between the peoples of the two countries, and the high level of understanding and cooperation between AKEL and the Communist Party of China was confirmed.
