Instead of Famagusta Hospital being strengthened, it is being led to the closure of wards and beds

25 July 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Ministry of Health and the state health services (OKYPY) to cover up once again their lack of operational planning and inefficiency proceeded in a hurry to the requisition of Famagusta Hospital designating it as the exclusive reference hospital of the whole country for Covid-19 cases.

Instead of Famagusta General Hospital being significantly strengthened during this period so that it can cope with increased needs, meet the needs of the residents of the free areas of Famagusta and treat patients with COVID, it was left to its fate and we have been led to the closure of beds and wards at Famagusta Hospital. Why were the warnings issued by doctors and nurses about the dangers that were being created not heeded?

We are in the 4th wave of the pandemic and 1.5 years after its outbreak, the Ministry of Health and OKYPY have still not managed to organise and strengthen hospitals. 15 months of the pandemic and the Ministry of Health and OKYPY have brought us to the point of no return where there is a lack of beds, staff, planning and perspective being observed.

AKEL will continue to demand the self-evident, namely the provision of quality health care for all, regardless of existing circumstances. We demand an immediate meeting with the Minister of Health to discuss the critical situation facing Famagusta General Hospital and the other hospitals in an effort to contribute towards confronting the crisis.
