Government planning to respond to fires is non-existent

10 May 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Just yesterday the Minister of Agriculture was assuring us that the government and the President of the Republic himself had taken all necessary actions to deal with the fires, following the major fire that had broken out in the Limassol State Forest.

What unfolded immediately afterwards, near the Ayios Silas Industrial Area, unfortunately confirms AKEL’s concerns and brings the government to be held to account, as it reveals the absence of any planning and the attempt to solve problems belatedly.

For the second time in 15 days, events themselves have demonstrated the enormous shortcomings and lack of any planning.

The President of the Republic and the government bear a responsibility. They must immediately take all those necessary measures to protect the country and its citizens from the fires.
