Doctor’s voice of despair reflects wretched situation in public hospitals

Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th June 2016, Nicosia

econ soc healthThe government must finally end the harsh austerity policy it is also implementing in the public health sector.

The voice of despair of the Pancyprian Government Doctors Trade Union (PASYKI) as expressed in an open letter addressed to the Minister of Health highlights yet again the wretched situation public hospitals have been led due to the austerity policies imposed by the government and ruling forces.

Understaffing is one of many problems public hospitals face. Doctors are leaving and are not being replaced, resulting in the existing problems being worsened and waiting lists becoming longer.

The painful consequences of this situation are being paid by citizens who are suffering and demanding solutions. The government must at last abandon it’s insensitive and intransigent stand and address seriously the problems facing the public health sector.

The government’s main mission is to solve problems for the benefit of society. The Anastasiades-DISY government with its policy is causing rather than solving problems.
