Christodoulides’ presence at the opening of a museum glorifying Grivas is an insult to history and democracy

Nikos Christodoulides’ presence at the opening of a museum in Chloraka honoring Grivas is an insult to history, democracy and the people of Cyprus. Mr. Christodoulides’ “promise” that Cypriot schools will visit this museum — a museum that glorifies Grivas —reveals the true ideological motives that target the minds of the young generation.

Mr. Christodoulides’ decision to also join the competition underway as to who is more representative of Grivas’ ideas and actions, which has intensified recently, is first and foremost disrespectful to the dead of the Cyprus tragedy and rubs salt into the wounds of the Cypriot people. At the same time, it is an institutionally unacceptable action, as it disregards the Resolution approved by the House of Representatives in December 2022, which called on the state “to stop funding any activities related to honoring Georgios Grivas, whom history has condemned as unworthy of any kind of honor from his homeland” and at the same time, called on the government and democratic institutions “to refrain from events honoring and glorifying all those who turned against democratic legality, and in particular the leader and members of EOKA B.”

The parties of the government coalition — DIKO, EDEK, and DIPA —which had supported this resolution adopted must take a position on the honoring and glorification of Grivas by Mr. Christodoulides.

AKEL, however, is sending a message in every direction that it will never compromise with the ongoing, half-century-long operation to falsify History which is seeking to distort the truth and glorify traitors and the treachery that was committed.
