AKEL supports the solidarity meeting with the Turkish people organised by the Cyprus Peace Council
The Turkish government is continuing the repression against the protesters who are demanding democracy. Today a third protester has been murdered.
We call on the International Organizations not to tolerate any longer the state violence in Turkey. The Turkish government must release and dro
p all charges against the protesters.
It must remove all restrictions on civil liberties and rights, and punish those guilty of crimes. Obviously the root causes of the uprising in Turkey are much wider than that presented by both the Turkish and foreign media. It has to do with the repression of labour rights, but also with serious political developments of international significance in Turkey itselfand the region where Turkey is involved.
Within this context AKEL expresses its support to the international solidarity meeting organized by the Cyprus Peace Council on Friday, 7th June at the End of Ledra at 5:00 p.m. and urges the Cypriot people to participate en masse. This bicommunal event is a protest against the oppressive policy of the Turkish Government and will express its solidarity with the uprising of a large section of the Turkish people.
