AKEL on the trilateral meeting in New York
29 September 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
AKEL considers as positive that, following the trilateral meeting in New York, the UN Secretary-General appears determined to continue the effort on the Cyprus problem, focusing on the substance rather than the promotion of Confidence Building Measures. It is particularly important that the UN Secretary-General has returned to the position of continuing the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in 2017 at Crans-Montana. This position is a reply to the unacceptable demands of Turkey and Tatar to overturn the basis of the Cyprus solution and the discussion of a “two-state solution,” while — if this position is successful — it will mean that we will once again be very close to a solution to the Cyprus problem based on principles.
In view of this position taken by the UN Secretary-General and in response to the partitionist demands of Turkey and Tatar, the Greek Cypriot side must be consistent and clear in its commitment to the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, which is a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, and in its readiness to continue the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in 2017, with all the negotiation acquis (body of work agreed) safeguarded and on the basis of the six points of the Guterres Framework.
We do not underestimate the difficulties and obstacles that continue to exist, primarily due to the positions of the Turkish side. However, submission and disappointment are not an option if we want to ensure a future of peace and security for our people by ending the occupation and partition of our homeland.
