AKEL on International Anti-Corruption Day
8 December 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
On the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, AKEL reaffirms that it will continue to exert every possible pressure, take initiatives, and submit proposals to combat and punish all forms of collusion/interwoven interests and corruption, regardless of who is involved.
Strengthening the principles of good governance, transparency, and the rule of law is fundamental to the democratic functioning of any state, and enhancing transparency and meritocracy is an obligation of the state, not some optional choice.
This is precisely why the phenomenon of impunity adds to the challenge of the multiple scandals that have been revealed one after another over the years. Society is indignant and outraged by the series of scandals that have undermined the image of the Republic of Cyprus internationally. The prolonged impunity in relation to the banking and “golden passports” scandals, the blatant institutional collusion and conflict of interest of both the former President of the Republic and members of his Council of Ministers in approving exceptional naturalizations by law firms or other offices linked to the previous government, as well as the serious allegations of cases that have arisen during the current administration, unfortunately confirm everything we have been denouncing for years.
AKEL reiterates that to combat corruption, specific policies and bold reforms must be promoted, such as the reform of the Legal Service, the separation of the public prosecutor’s powers from the role of legal advisor to the executive, the adoption of legislation to prevent concentration of the ownership status of the media, and the strengthening of the powers of the Anti-Corruption Authority.
