AKEL meets with Turkish Cypriot politicians on the Cyprus problem
22 April 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
A big AKEL delegation, headed by the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, had meetings with Turkish Cypriot politicians within the framework of the ongoing efforts to resume the talks and reach a solution.
The statement follows verbatim:
“Today we had two very constructive and positive meetings. One with Mehmet Ali Talat and the other with Mustafa Akinci. The subject of the meetings was the current phase of the Cyprus problem and, more generally, the situation as it is unfolding in Cyprus, against the backdrop of the prolonged deadlock on the Cyprus problem, as well as on the broader situation in our region, which unavoidably affects it in various ways.
At the meeting, we all reiterated our conviction that, for Cyprus to secure the future of our country and people—Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots—a solution to the Cyprus problem must be achieved.
That’s precisely why, regardless of the difficulties, we must persist in our efforts to break the deadlock and resume the talks, with the aim of completing a procedure that began years ago. The goal is to reunite our country and people so that, together, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can determine their own future and lives.
We had the opportunity, with these two experienced Turkish Cypriot politicians, to exchange views and ideas that are particularly useful to us as well, as we remain committed—and will continue to remain committed—to achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Of course, when we speak about a solution, it is very important to begin by reaffirming what has already been agreed upon: the basis for a solution, which is a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality; the convergences that have been achieved; as well as all those elements that are crucial for sustaining the ongoing effort to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem.”
