AKEL GS: DISY attacks AKEL because it can’t endure the pressure

24th May 2021, ‘Dialogos’ portal

The result of the ballot box is what matters and not the polls and this week AKEL will attempt to contact as many citizens as possible, Andros Kyprianou commented on ‘Astra’ radio station.

The General Secretary of AKEL assessed that the situation regarding the rallying of the party grass roots is improving as the time of the elections approaches.

A.Kyprianou stressed that there is indignation and bitterness among citizens towards the government, and all this shouldn’t be translated into abstention, but by mass participation in the elections.

Referring to the attacks launched by President Anastasiades, A. Kyprianou recalled that when DISY was in opposition it was saying that the government should not take an active participation in the elections.

The General Secretary of AKEL added that the criticism of AKEL isn’t surprising, stating that the government and DISY cannot stand the pressure and estimated that this week the attacks against the Party will intensify.

Kyprianou characteristically said that the only thing that the President and DISY haven’t blamed AKEL is for the Asia Minor catastrophe.

He characterized the government ruling forces as inconsistent and that they operate to serve expediencies and rejected DISY’s criticism that AKEL’s policy will destroy the country.

Referring to the problems facing small and medium-sized enterprises due to the pandemic, A.Kyprianou said that if SME’s don’t receive substantial support from the government, many of them will close.

He reiterated that AKEL demands that the issue of rents is settled, an end to evictions, a special fund to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises should be established and a body set up so that SME’s could secure funding from European funds.

The President rightly reacts to Turkey’s unacceptable demand for a solution of a two states solution but this isn’t enough, the General Secretary of AKEL pointed out.

Speaking to ‘Astra’ radio station, A. Kyprianou noted that by Mr. Anastasiades pursuing this tactic, Turkey will be adamant, as a result of which we will be led to partition.

The General Secretary of AKEL called on President Anastasiades to take initiatives on the Cyprus problem, given that this is the only way he will prove if he is interested in a solution.

However, A.Kyprianou pointed out that with the stance he has adopted so far, Mr. Anastasiades proves that he is not interested in the solution of the Cyprus problem.
