AKEL denounces cronyism and nepotism

Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member Aristos Damianou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th May 2020, Nicosia

Recently several Court decisions, with which the political appointments of the Anastasiades-DISY government and decisions of the government-appointed Public Service Commission (ΕDY) were annulled, have intensified. In its most recent decision, which concerns the filling of the position of Director of Commerce and Industry, the Administrative Court notes that “the comparative evaluation of the candidates […] appears according to the data we have before us […] to be deficient”.

At a time when everyone is promising meritocracy and transparency and people are demanding them, the government ruling forces continue their policy of favouritism and clientelism, violating basic principles of natural justice. There are dozens of cases where capable and worthy people are not appointed or being promoted because of purely petty-political considerations and cronyism.

It is obvious that the Presidential Palace and ruling DISY party put cronyism and favouritism convenience of mothers over and above principles and values such as meritocracy and good governance. And this is unacceptable.
