AKEL condemns the actions of the Turkish occupation forces in Pyla

16 April 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL condemns the actions of the Turkish occupation forces in Pyla and calls for de-escalation and the full respect for the status of the area and the mission of United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). It is evident that certain circles in the occupied territories are seeking, through such provocative actions, to create a vicious cycle of tension and mistrust between the two communities, particularly at a time when efforts to resume the negotiation procedure are intensifying.

Such actions undermine the security, trust, and cooperation between the two communities, which are also imperative for addressing immediate challenges such as the foot-and-mouth disease, which threatens livestock farming across our island.

AKEL reiterates that the occupying, partitionist status quo and the absence of a negotiation procedure provide fertile ground for new negative fait accompli and insecurity. Only a solution to the Cyprus problem on the agreed basis and within the agreed framework—one that liberates and reunites our homeland—can guarantee a future of peace and security for all of Cyprus and for all Cypriots.
