AKEL Concerns about the government’s objectives in relation to the Akamas Peninsula

The government must confirm or deny the ‘Fileleftheros’ paper

Today’s press report of the newspaper “Fileleftheros” about yesterday’s meeting at the Presidential Palace on the Akamas issue raises new concerns about the government’s real objectives surrounding the future of the peninsula.

According to the reports, Nicos Anastasiades himself is looking for ways to bypass the opinion of the Environmental Authority on the Akamas Local Plan and the terms/conditions included in it. These conditions are not recommendations, but are legally binding. It is the obligation of the Government and the Planning Board to comply with them.

The Government must now provide an explanation and either refute or confirm the specific press reports. Unless these reports are categorically and convincingly refuted, it is clear that the government continues to manipulate and exert political pressure behind the scenes to bypass procedures in order to serve powerful private interests leading to the destruction of the Akamas peninsula.

AKEL once again warns the ruling DISY party and its government that it will not permit this unique habitat of our island to be sacrificed for the sake of business interests and petty political pursuits.
