Message of congratulations from the General Secretary of AKEL to the President of Brazil on his re-election

27 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The AKEL General Secretary, Stefanos Stefanou, sent the following message to Jose Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva on his re-election as President of Brazil. Messages have also been sent to the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Workers’ Party (PT), which are key members of the coalition that worked for and secured victory in the presidential elections on 25 October.

“The victory achieved in the second round of the presidential elections is of immense significance, first and foremost for the people of Brazil, who defended democracy, as well as the labour, social and cultural gains and the rights won through struggle. This victory has halted the return of far-right forces to power and the subjugation of the country and its natural resources to those who regard South America – and indeed the entire planet – as their ‘backyard’, where they can act with impunity.

The defence of democracy, sovereignty and dignity has united and mobilised those forces which have not forgotten the past and do not wish to return to its darkest chapters; those who defend peace, pluralism and cooperation. This is of great significance for the peoples of your continent, but also beyond it, at a time of great challenges and threats to the future of humanity and our planet.

On behalf of the Central Committee of AKEL and myself personally, I warmly congratulate you, as well as all the political and social forces that stood by your side for this undisputed re-election. I wish you every success in your work on behalf of the people of Brazil, the peaceful development of the region, the promotion of international relations based on the respect for international law, and the protection of the Amazon and our planet.”
