International Symposium on the Left and the Contemporary World to mark the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of Cyprus – AKEL

7 November 2026 | PEO Amphitheatre | Nicosia

The International Symposium on the Left and the Contemporary World is being organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Party of Cyprus – AKEL, honouring a century of struggle for workers’ rights, social justice, the reunification of Cyprus, peace and socialism. At the same time, AKEL on 7 November will pay tribute to the Great October Socialist Revolution, a historic event that decisively shaped the course of the international workers and communist movement and the history of the 20th century.

At a time of profound economic, social and geopolitical upheaval, the Symposium aims to provide a forum for dialogue and an exchange of experiences amongst Communist, left-wing and progressive forces from different parts of the world. Party representatives, political figures, academics and members of the worker’s movement are gathering in Cyprus to discuss the major challenges of our time, the contradictions and dead ends of contemporary capitalism, as well as the possibilities and paths towards social change.

Through five thematic sessions, the Symposium will examine different yet interlinked aspects of contemporary reality: the crisis of capitalism and the dead ends of the neoliberal model, the intensification of international competition, militarisation, international law and the prospect of peace, the rise of the far right and neo-fascism and the Left’s response, contemporary experiences and the various paths towards social transformation and the search for a future beyond capitalism, as well as the challenges, strategy and prospects for the Left in Europe.

The Symposium aims to contribute to a substantive dialogue on the role of the Left within the context of the 21st century, to the exchange of experiences, and to the development of internationalist cooperation and solidarity. A dialogue that is not limited to analysing current impasses, but that also focuses on identifying the social and political forces, struggles and prospects that can pave the way for a world of peace, social justice, equality and socialism.
