The protests across Europe send a clear message: the needs of the people come before the profits of the monopolies

19 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

In light of the escalation of the protests in France, as well as in a number of other European countries, AKEL joins its voice with that of young people and workers who are asserting measures to tackle inflation, expensiveness and the rising cost of living, for affordable housing, dignified wages, better education, healthcare and public services.

These protests, despite their different starting points and specific demands, share a common link: the mounting indignation of millions of Europeans at the policies being pursued that erode their standard of living and deprive the young generation of the prospect of a dignified life.

The neoliberal policies implemented for years by the ruling circles of the European Union have created enormous social dead-ends, exacerbating inequalities. It is telling that, according to the European Central Bank, the wealthiest 10 per cent of households in the eurozone own just 57.2 per cent of total net wealth, whilst the poorest 50 per cent own just 5.08 per cent.

This social outcry is a cry of resistance against the policies of national governments and the leadership of the European Union, sending the message that the interests of the peoples must at long last take precedence over the interests of European corporate conglomerates and monopolies. Unfortunately, national governments and the EU ruling elite refusing to face reality, not only fail to heed these messages, but are instead channelling ever more resources into the war and arms industry, diverting them from the already meagre resources to support European societies.

The peoples of Europe need a radical change in political priorities: a fairer redistribution of the wealth produced, dignified jobs and strong social protection for those in need.
