Musical Theatrical Production ‘The End of the Thread’

A vivid journey through 100 years of AKEL’s history and struggles

2 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL is proud to announce the presentation of the major musical theatre production ‘The End of the Thread’, which will be staged on Friday 6 November 2026 at 8.00 pm at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre.

This is a production that is not merely a theatrical performance, but a living journey through the history of our Party, designed to honour the 100 years of struggle, sacrifices and service of the Communist Party of Cyprus-AKEL and the People’s Movement of the Left [mass organisations of the Left].

100 years of struggles, sacrifices and dedication that have left an indelible mark on the political and social struggles of the people and of our Cyprus, contributing decisively to the progress, prosperity and development of society in all sectors.

A few words about the production:

The performance is a production dedicated to the memory, to the struggles and to the people who kept the vision of a different world alive over the course of a century. The production begins in the early years of the 20th century and extends to the present day (2026), spanning the major social and political changes in Cyprus.

The entire history of our country unfolds through the eyes of a working-class Cypriot family. Centred around an old trunk on stage, which serves as a “space of memory”, the audience will witness the evolution of the People’s Movement of the Left, highlighting key milestones in the 100-year history of the Communist Party of Cyprus-AKEL.

A central symbolic motif of the production is a “red thread”, which is passed from hand to hand. It symbolises that history does not end and the struggle that does not cease, as long as it is passed down from generation to generation.

Through a combination of theatre, music, choir and screenings of archive footage, this musical theatre production serves as a historical vindication and an act of resistance against forgetfulness. It brings to light unseen aspects of this heroic journey – the persecutions, the sacrifices and the stance against campaigns of terror – highlighting that the people of this homeland did not surrender and never accepted living with their heads bowed. That they stood as unyielding standard-bearers of ideals, freedom, democracy, human rights, social justice and of socialism.

But also that they will never cease to fight for freedom and reunification, and for our Cyprus, the common homeland of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.
