Meeting between the AKEL General Secretary and the new Lebanese Ambassador

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met yesterday, Friday, with the new Lebanese Ambassador to Cyprus, Reina Charbel, whom he welcomed to our country. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, Head of the Party’s International Relations and European Policy Department.

Stefanos Stefanou briefed the Lebanese Ambassador on the recent consultations held by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, and his Personal Envoy, with the aim of creating the preconditions for the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in 2017.

More specifically, the General Secretary of AKEL emphasised that the basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem, a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, cannot be altered, and that the convergences recorded and the entire negotiation acquis must be safeguarded in order to lead to the resumption of negotiations.

During the meeting, views were exchanged on the volatile situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and particular concern was expressed regarding developments and their far-reaching implications. The need to respect international law, the UN Charter and UN Resolutions was stressed.

Finally, support was expressed for the development of the existing good bilateral relations between the two countries and their peoples.
