Christodoulides and DISY are providing political cover for the rampant corruption and entanglement in the country

As the days go by and the scale of institutional corruption and entanglement/interwoven interests surrounding the black spy van affair is revealed, the rule of law in Cyprus is being increasingly undermined, first and foremost by those who ought to be its guardians.

At the same time, the deafening silence of Nicos Christodoulides, the coalition parties and DISY confirms either their involvement in or their tolerance of a system of power that provides political cover for the rampant corruption and entanglement in the country.

If, after so many days of conflicting statements between the Attorney General’s Office and the Anti-Corruption Authority, the undermining of the rule of law and admissions regarding the stance taken by the Deputy Attorney General – who may be implicated in the case – the President of the Republic has no comment on the matter, then we naturally wonder who is actually governing this country?

The unprecedented cover-up, the entrenchment of impunity and the deepening of the institutional crisis in the country since the Right has been in power – whether under Anastasiades or Christodoulides — cannot be addressed merely through verbal condemnations but demand the immediate assignment of responsibility and a full investigation into all aspects of the case.

AKEL will not remain silent now either in the face of attempts to keep the scandal in the dark, following on from the initiatives it has undertaken in the past to ensure accountability and genuine apportion of responsibilities. AKEL has submitted a written question on the matter to the relevant parliamentary Committee and demands that the case of the surveillance van be reopened, that the findings of Ilias Stefanou be made public immediately, and that all aspects of the case be thoroughly investigated.
