Can Nicos Anastasiades really be delivering lessons on the rule of law?

If the matter were not so serious, it would provoke laughter the fact that Nicos Anastasiades, whose administration has been associated more than any other with corruption, entanglement and conflicts of interest, is today delivering lectures on the rule of law and the rules governing the investigation of the allegations against him.

Nikos Anastasiades certainly has every right to defend himself and to put forward his objections. However, he cannot use legalistic contortions to obscure the essential facts. An independent authority of the Republic, following an investigation over many years has documented sufficient evidence of a series of potential criminal offences involving him, his law firm and other individuals.

Regardless of the final outcome of the criminal investigation, nothing can erase the glaring conflict of interest in the ‘golden passports’ scandal, nor the unprecedented surge in corruption and entanglement under the Anastasiades-DISY administration.

However many doubts and omissions one may now seek to attribute to the Anti-Corruption Authority, one thing remains unchanged. The political and institutional legacy of that administration is already etched in the consciousness of Cypriot society and in the history of the country.
