AKEL on the appointment of an Envoy of the European Commission on the Cyprus problem

14 July 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL welcomes the appointment of a European Commission Special Representative for the Cyprus problem and expresses the hope that this will contribute to the efforts of the United Nations to break the deadlock on the Cyprus problem, with a view to resuming negotiations for a solution on the agreed basis and within the agreed framework. The appointment of a Special Representative of the European Commission, as on previous occasions that have been the case, is aiming to support these efforts, always within the framework of the United Nations, and this is particularly important under current conditions, as the UN Secretary-General is exploring the possibilities of convening an informal enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem.

AKEL takes this opportunity to stress the critical importance, at this stage of the Cyprus problem, of safeguarding the entire negotiation acquis and the Guterres Framework, on the basis of which the negotiations on the remaining issues must continue.

AKEL reiterates that a solution to the Cyprus problem—with the termination of the Turkish occupation and the reunification of our homeland—is the only path to a future of peace and security for all of Cyprus and all Cypriots.
