The NATO Summit – Tailored to Suit Turkey’s Needs
9 July 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Generalised preparations for war, contracts worth billions of euros for the US military-industrial complex, the militarization of national economies, an escalation of the war in Ukraine and the drastic upgrading of Turkey. This is the legacy the NATO Summit left behind that convened in Ankara, which marks a new and dangerous escalation of the Alliance’s imperialist aggression and a new phase in the militarization of the world—a development that can only generate concern among the peoples of the world.
This must be a cause for deep concern for Cyprus and its people, given that the NATO summit was tailored to suit Turkey and Erdogan. The praise heaped on Erdogan by Trump and NATO Secretary General Rutte, the US government’s intentions to lift previous sanctions on Turkey regarding the provision of military equipment, but also the statements made by EU officials regarding Turkey’s role in EU defence and security, are indicative of the role that the US, NATO and the EU attribute to the occupying power Turkey.
Indeed, all these gifts and benefits that Turkey is receiving are proceeding without even the slightest change in Ankara’s systematic and flagrant violation of the principles of international law, good neighbourliness, democracy, and human rights, and at the same time of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus is still continuing.
These realities completely dispel the illusions that are being cultivated regarding what Cyprus can truly expect from the US and NATO and the much-touted Western orientation of the Christodoulides government. Moreover, these developments constitute yet another reply to all those forces and circles who are promoting the involvement of NATO in the solution of the Cyprus problem or even for our country’s accession to a military alliance in which Turkey plays the role of deputy commander.
AKEL stresses that NATO was and remains the sponsor of the Turkish occupation and the entire Cypriot tragedy; it was and remains a deadly threat to world peace and a permanent danger to the peoples of the world.
AKEL joins its voice with those of tens of millions of people all over the world who are demanding that NATO be dissolved, that the disastrous course towards a generalised outbreak of war on the planet be averted, and that international law and peace must be respected.
